Come Back
05:11
|
|||
Words by Elizabeth Levett-Fortier
Up late, I can hear wing beats,
Runway, waiting for you.
Breathe deep, constant imagining.
Come back safely to me.
Outside rain is whispering,
Warm clouds, miles of blue.
My dreams, I can see everything.
Sail home in your wooden shoe.
Speak slowly, leaves in the wind.
Your eyes, time to begin.
Speak slowly, leaves in the wind.
Your eyes, time to begin.
Up late, trying to make sense of things.
Stayed home, listening for you.
Closed eyes, constant imagining.
Sail home in your wooden shoe.
Outside branches trembling,
warm clouds, stones on the trail.
In dreams so much more interesting.
Count back the sum of these days.
Speak slowly, leaves in the wind.
Your eyes, time to begin.
Speak slowly, leaves in the wind.
Your eyes, time to begin.

Imperfect Crime

Words by Elizabeth Levett Fortier
She says, she says, she's got to have some.
She knows she holds his heart for ransom.
Don't come back with empty pockets,
She needs rings and clothes and lockets.
He watched the alley, watched the guard.
He tried the locks, the window's barred.
The bait was set, the trap was laid.
Exquisitely her plans were made.
Sargent Lou had walked this street
He'd seen the signs, he knew his beat
Lucy Bell, they called her then.
She had a way with all the men.
The guard was slow, but easily paid.
And the streets were swelled for the big parade.
He tried the lock, found the door,
padded softly across the floor.
The glass cut neatly beneath his hand.
He'd fetch at least a hundred grand.
He stumbled out into the dance -
There she was, a crazy chance.
He found his way into her arms
and felt at last he was safe from harm.
She snapped the cuffs on neat and tight –
Smoothed her hair, flipped on the light
She got her man, she got the swag -
Sergeant Lucy all in drag.

Words by Elizabeth Levett-Fortier
She feels the wind blow outside her window
has avocadoes and pink flamingoes
there on the lawn, sandals and songs,
crystals hang down, soon she'll be gone.
She wears a sundress with her bikini and sea shell necklace,
she takes her bike out - laughs at the old folks –
they drink tequila down by the boardwalk
and set out sprinklers for their hydrangeas.
Rusted blue cars, seashells in jars,
sun's almost down, soon she'll be gone.
She rides way up to La Jolla. He's at the cove –
beers with his friends. She smiles - rides off to the cliff side.
He wants her where the summer never ends.
She feels the wind blow outside her window
picks out some stones and blooms for her dresser.
Sleeps to the sound of waves as they pound.
She wakes to his call when he comes around.
Rusted blue cars, seashells in jars,
sun's almost down, soon she'll be gone.
They ride down to Ensenada.
He smiles - the road is dark and bends.
She laughs, hurries to the cliff side.
She loves him - summer never ends.

Fare You Well
02:32
|
|||
Words by Elizabeth Levett Fortier
Say goodnight to all the sailors and to all the ships at sea.
Fare you well and may breezes guide you in.
Say so long to the leaving geese and people up in planes.
Fare you well and may sunlight warm your wings.
Well it's a long, long way from over here to over there.
Such a wide, wide ocean in between.
And I'll miss you till I see you so keep safe to you return.
Fare you well, buenos noches, fare you well.
Au revoir to the satellites and rockets way up there.
Adios, as you wander through the night.
Gute nacht, all you freight trains and truckers on the road.
Fare you well and may all your loads be light.
It's such a long, long way from over here to over there.
Such a great sky, far as I can see.
And you're sleeping while I sing this so I wish for you sweet dreams.
Fare you well, sayonara, fare you well.

Interesting Person
04:40
|

Words by Elizabeth Levett Fortier
I’m a simple person. It’s a simple life I lead.
With a simple husband and the simple things we need.
But sometimes I wonder when I’m walking down the street,
Could I just do something beautiful and complete.
And I get high and excited gazing at the Pantone –
Jade green and chromium red.
I want to paint black cats cavorting in a sea of mustard.
Want to fill the canvas with pictures in my head.
You’re an interesting person. I wish I could be like you.
You’re such an interesting person. Show me all the things you do.
I’m a simple person, simply understood,
With a single reason in a lonely neighborhood.
Go to bed early, and I keep my dishes clean.
Can I just say something different and unique?
And I get high hopes, dipping in your in wells.
You got graphite pencils and speedball pens.
I want to wear black boots and dress in crimson,
Stay up late writing poems in my bed.
Can I be an interesting person? Would you hang around with me?
Can I be an interesting person?
I’ll show you all the things I see.

Here We Are
03:15
|
|||
Words by Elizabeth Levett-Fortier
Here we are
The night comes on.
It’s one more day and it’s
One more time.
I’m the one to ease your mind.
We’ll push the stone back up,
You let me fill your cup.
We’ll be fine.
We’ll come inside,
And just be quiet.
The night is ours and
everything is done.
You’re the one to make me smile.
It’s one more day,
just one more day
and one more time.
I’m sure there’s something restless
in those waves.
Sometimes so much sadness in your face.
Still there’s rain
and purple clouds.
we’ll leave the cold
and come inside.
Let our hearts be still.
Here we are.
One more time with music in the dark.

When All This Blows Over
03:46
|
|||
Words by Elizabeth Levett Fortier
You should have seen us then
When we were all together.
We weren’t afraid of anything
We could go on forever.
Then this whole thing got going and
Now it’s such a mess.
Ashes glowing in yellow skies and
I can’t turn my head.
Maybe when all this blows over,
I’ll see you again
Maybe when all this blows over,
We'll go out in the rain
You should have seen us then,
Like some velvet dream.
We didn’t know what was coming.
We were a sight to be seen.
Then all the changes started.
Some of us got lost.
Still I can hear your voice so clear
Among the trees in the frost.
Maybe when all this blows over,
We'll all laugh again.
Maybe when all this blows over,
We'll go run in the rain.

Dream Again
03:23
|
|||
Words by Elizabeth Levett Fortier
I've come back to dream again, peek through the veil.
I'll sleep under a grey sky in the state of grace that's you and I.
Once we were both so young, just like these.
Were spread out in the sunshine, wild as sweet peas.
We'll find a place at the water's edge, let us lay down our sleepy heads.
Cover us up and we dream again. Cover us up and we dream again.
Found a candle still alive - nearly blew it out.
Had to let it stand for me, sit and watch the sun come up.
Wipe the dust from our seeing glass, try to see how our days will pass.
Call me when the clouds come back.
Give me the peace I lack.
So many ways for a life to go, you are the dearest thing I know.
Cover us up and we dream again. Cover us up and we dream again.
