lyrics

Slow Boat (Elizabeth Levett-Fortier, William E Gibson)

We stepped off the gangway just before three
Weighed anchor, but what time? Stopped
Speechless and rhymes, how did we get on this vessel?

Warm clouds, still water,
Grey stillness, alone in the fog.
Up late watching the rain come
Can't say when I'll be home again.
Standing here, so close to the side,
imagine how easily I could glide.
Each of us, slow in our progress,
Sails ragged in early darkness.
Probably time to lay myself down,
sweet dream of putting my feet on the ground.
I could almost howl into the wind.
Foghorns rattle my bones once again.
It's the way that they talk here, the things that they say,
I'm losing my balance and slipping away.
Can the water carry my voice on to you,
Till morning comes on, the only thing true?
The day will wake and shake its head
I can remember the things that you said.
Dreams merge,
I wait for the dawn.
Not going under, just moving along.
